South Africa has the greatest gap between rich and poor of all the countries in the world. Think about these facts (1):
- Over 50% of the population has an income of less than U.S. $1 per day (2).
- Unemployment is 38%.
- 40% of the population is effectively without income.
- 70% of South Africans under 30 have never had a job.
- Over 6 million people are infected by AIDS; 600 per day die from the effects of AIDS.
- High percentages of blacks in rural areas and informal urban settlements live in makeshift shacks without water, electricity, heat, or sanitation.
(1) Note that normal problems of data collection and analysis are exacerbated in South Africa partially because, under Apartheid, collection systems for black people were considered to be low priority.
